How to Revoke Mint Authority, Freeze Accounts and Update Metadata on a Solana Token

Everything a token creator can still do after launch comes down to three authorities. Here is what each one controls, how to use it, and how to give it up for good.

Short answer: open solback.app, choose Token Manager, connect the wallet that holds the authority, and pick the token from the list the page builds for you (or paste its address). The panel shows who holds mint, freeze and update authority. Switch to the operation you want — revoke, mint more, freeze / thaw, or update metadata — fill in the details, confirm the flat fee and sign. Revoking costs 0.048 SOL however many authorities you give up; freezing is 0.016 SOL per account, thawing 0.04, minting 0.048, updating 0.04.

What are the three authorities on a Solana token?

An SPL token has no owner in the ordinary sense. What it has is three addresses recorded on-chain, each allowed to do one specific thing, and each of which can be set to nobody permanently.

Authority Lives in Lets the holder When it is gone
Mint authorityThe mint accountCreate new tokens, to any addressThe supply is fixed forever
Freeze authorityThe mint accountFreeze or thaw any holder's token accountNo account of that token can ever be frozen
Update authorityThe Metaplex metadata accountChange the name, symbol, logo, description and linksThe metadata is immutable

These are the fields that rug-check tools and screener badges are built on. "Mint authority revoked" means no inflation; "freeze authority revoked" means the creator cannot lock holders out; "immutable" means the branding cannot be swapped under people's feet. Anyone can read them from the mint address, which is why keeping one is a decision you should be able to explain.

Note what is not on the list: decimals, which can never be changed by anyone, and the tokens already in circulation, which no authority can take back.

How do you manage a token with SolBack, step by step?

Step 1: Open Token Manager and connect the authority wallet

Go to solback.app, open the tools panel and choose Token Manager. Connect the wallet that holds the authority you want to use. This matters more than usual: the page reads the authorities from the chain, and an operation only unlocks when the connected wallet is the address recorded for it. If you created the token on SolBack, it is the wallet you connected at creation.

Step 2: Pick the token

Once a wallet is connected, the page lists the tokens it controls — every token where this wallet still holds at least one live authority — with badges showing which. Click one to load it. The list is built from the on-chain metadata index together with the wallet's own holdings, so a token created a moment ago may take a few minutes to appear; in that case, or for a token you hold mint or freeze authority over but neither hold nor update, paste the mint address and look it up.

Step 3: Read the authority panel

The header shows the name, symbol, total supply and decimals, and flags Token-2022 mints. Below it, each authority reads Yours, Not held by this wallet or Revoked. The operation tabs follow from that: anything you are not entitled to is greyed out, and if the wallet holds nothing at all the page says so.

Step 4: Choose the operation and fill in the details

Four tabs. Each is covered in its own section below.

Step 5: Confirm the fee and sign

Every operation ends in a confirmation dialog that lists exactly what is about to happen — which authorities, how many accounts, what amount to whom — and the service fee. Approve the transaction in your wallet. When it confirms, the page re-reads the chain and the panel updates to the new state; a token you have just fully revoked drops out of the list.

How do you revoke mint, freeze or update authority?

Open the Revoke tab. It shows one checkbox per authority the wallet still holds; none is pre-ticked, because there is no undo. Tick what you want to give up and confirm. Mint and freeze authority are set to nothing on the mint account; update authority is revoked by marking the Metaplex metadata immutable, which also fixes the name, symbol and logo.

The fee is a flat 0.048 SOL for the operation, whether you tick one authority or all three, so if you intend to revoke everything, do it in one go.

There is no way back. The Token Program has an instruction to set an authority to nothing and none to set it again. Before you revoke mint authority, be certain you will never need to mint — rewards, vesting, a future round — and before you make the metadata immutable, be certain the logo and description are final. The right time to revoke is when you are sure, not when someone on the internet is impatient.

For a token made with Token Creator that already revoked mint and freeze at launch, the usual remaining step is this: make the metadata immutable once the branding has settled.

How do you mint more of a token?

Possible only while the wallet holds mint authority. Open the Mint tab, enter the recipient (your own wallet by default) and the amount in token units — the page shows the current supply for reference. If the recipient has no token account for this mint yet, a standard account is created in the same transaction and its current 0.00148844 SOL minimum is paid by you. The service fee is 0.048 SOL.

Minting to someone else's address is a transfer that skips your own balance; it is convenient for distributing rewards directly. For a long list of recipients, mint to yourself and use Batch Send, which takes no fee.

How do you freeze or thaw a holder's account?

Possible only while the wallet holds freeze authority. Open the Freeze / Thaw tab, choose the direction, and paste the addresses one per line — wallet addresses or token account addresses both work, and you can mix them. Click Resolve first: the page looks each one up and tells you which will actually be processed. Accounts that do not exist, are already in the target state, or appear twice are shown and skipped rather than sent to fail on-chain.

The fee is per account actually processed: 0.016 SOL to freeze, 0.04 SOL to thaw. A long list is split into several transactions, each of which you approve in turn; each one settles on its own, so a failure part-way leaves the earlier batches done and the later ones untouched.

Freezing is visible and consequential. A frozen account cannot send or receive that token until you thaw it. Legitimate reasons exist — a compromised wallet, a legal hold, a stablecoin-style compliance policy — but every holder can see that you did it and that you can do it to them. If you have no such reason, revoking freeze authority is worth more to your token than keeping the option.

How do you update a token's name, logo or description?

Possible while the wallet holds update authority and the metadata is still mutable. Open the Update tab. The name and symbol are edited in place, within the same limits as at creation (32 and 10 bytes). For the rest there are two modes:

The fee is 0.04 SOL. Creator entries already verified on the metadata are carried over untouched, because Metaplex will not let them be quietly dropped. Two kinds of token are out of scope here: Token-2022 mints, whose metadata usually lives in a mint extension rather than a Metaplex account, and metadata that carries a collection or uses field, which this flow does not rewrite.

What does Token Manager cost?

Operation Service fee Also paid to Solana
Revoke authority — any number of the three0.048 SOL flatNetwork fee
Mint more0.048 SOLNetwork fee, plus the current 0.00148844 SOL minimum if the recipient needs a standard token account
Freeze0.016 SOL per accountNetwork fee per transaction
Thaw0.04 SOL per accountNetwork fee per transaction
Update metadata0.04 SOLNetwork fee

Every fee is a transfer instruction inside the operation's own transaction, so it is paid only when the operation succeeds. These are flat prices, not percentages, and unlike SolBack's rent-recovery tools they carry no referral split.

What should a token creator do, and in what order?

A sequence that holds up, for a token launched to be traded:

  1. Launch with mint and freeze revoked in the creation transaction, unless you have a stated reason to keep one. Token Creator does this by default.
  2. Settle the branding while update authority is still yours: fix the logo, tidy the description, add the links you forgot.
  3. Distribute — airdrops, team, liquidity — with tools that take no cut of transfers.
  4. Make the metadata immutable once nothing about the presentation is going to change. That is the last authority, and giving it up is the last thing holders will ask for.

If you kept mint or freeze authority on purpose, write down why somewhere public. A retained authority with a stated reason is a policy; one without is a red flag.

Manage the tokens your wallet controls

Connect, pick the token from the list, and revoke, mint, freeze, thaw or update — each in one confirmed transaction with a flat fee.

Open Token Manager Flat fees: revoke 0.048 SOL, mint 0.048 SOL, freeze 0.016 SOL per account, thaw 0.04 SOL per account, update 0.04 SOL. Charged only when the operation succeeds.

Still have questions about Solana token authorities?

Can I get an authority back after revoking it?
No. Revoking sets the authority to nothing on-chain, and the Token Program has no instruction to set it again. That is precisely why revoking reassures holders — and why SolBack never pre-ticks the boxes and makes you confirm before signing.
Does revoking mint authority make my token safe?
It fixes the supply, which removes one specific risk: the creator inflating the token. Holders and rug-check tools also look at freeze authority, whether the metadata is mutable, how the supply is distributed, and whether the liquidity is locked. Revoking mint authority is necessary for a clean score, not sufficient.
Why does the page say an authority is not held by this wallet?
Because the wallet you connected is not the one recorded on-chain for that authority. Authorities belong to whichever address created the token or was later assigned, so connect that wallet. If the token was created on SolBack, it is the wallet you connected at creation. If nobody holds the authority any more, the page shows it as revoked instead.
Can I freeze a specific holder's tokens?
Only if your wallet still holds freeze authority for that token. Paste the holder's wallet address or their token account address; SolBack resolves it, checks it is not already frozen, and freezes it for 0.016 SOL. Thawing is 0.04 SOL. A frozen account cannot send or receive that token until it is thawed, so use it for real reasons — a compromised address, a compliance hold — and expect holders to notice.
Why can't I update the metadata of my Token-2022 token?
Token-2022 tokens usually store their metadata in a mint extension rather than a Metaplex account, and SolBack's update flow only handles the Metaplex account. For Token-2022 tokens the manager still supports minting more, freezing and thawing, and revoking mint and freeze authority.
What does Token Manager cost?
Flat service fees paid inside the same transaction: revoking authority 0.048 SOL regardless of how many you tick, minting more 0.048 SOL, freezing 0.016 SOL per account, thawing 0.04 SOL per account, updating metadata 0.04 SOL. Plus the usual network fee, and the current 0.00148844 SOL minimum if minting creates a standard token account for the recipient. There is no percentage and no referral split.
